Ear Wax Removal
We offer 2 different ear wax removal treatments tailored to individual preferences and different ear conditions. The initial consultation with the Audiologist will help determine the most suitable method for you. The Audiologist will assess the ear wax before explaining each option clearly, allowing you to make an informed decision.
Vorotek O Scope
We use hospital grade equipment such as the Vorotek O Scope when performing ear wax removal. The Vorotek O Scope is used by ENT surgeons in order to examine the ear canal and ear drum before performing delicate ear canal work. It works in a similar way to that of a microscope in that Vorotek O Scope’s optical pathway converges the eyes to just 12mm apart. This allows both eyes to reach the bottom of narrow cavities, ensuring excellent depth perception and precision when performing treatments.

TREATMENT
Microsuction
Microsuction is the safest and quickest method of removing ear wax as the ear canal remains visible to the Audiologist throughout the procedure. It involves a gentle suction device that removes wax easily without the use of water.
Microsuction requires good knowledge of the anatomy of the ear, as well as additional training on how to safely use the equipment, thus it is important a Qualified Clinical Audiologist performs the treatment.
✔ Safe for perforated ears / ears that have been operated on
✔safest method of ear wax removal
✔pain free and quick
✔less infection risk as no water is used
Whilst microsuction is deemed to be extremely safe, all treatments come with an element of risk.
✗ can be loud (clinical studies have deemed noise levels to be safe)
✗ requires the patient to remain still during treatment - damage can be done to the eardrum or ear canal caused by sudden head movement by the patient.
Irrigation
Irrigation is typically performed by Audiologists, GPs and nurses. It involves gently flushing warm water through the ear canal, which slowly falls back out bringing the wax with it. As there is a long list of contraindications in relation to syringing/irrigation many GP surgeries are now withdrawing their ear wax removal service.
✔ When it works, it works well
✔ not as loud as microsuction
✗ Cannot be used on perforated ear/ history of ear problems
✗ Cannot be performed following ear surgery
✗ undiagnosed perforation may not be seen due to the wax build up
✗ May not remove hardened wax - additional olive oil may have to be used
✗ May cause dizziness if water is not at the correct temperature
✗ May cause tinnitus
✗ May cause ear infection
